Adobe Illustrator Versions By Year Instant

This era established Illustrator as the industry standard for vector design, heavily reliant on Adobe's PostScript language.

  • 1988 – Illustrator 1.1 (Macintosh)

  • 1989 – Illustrator 2.0 (Macintosh) / 1.0 (Windows)

  • The AI inflection point (pre-Generative AI). Version 27.0 focused on Mockup (automatically warping vectors onto product photos like t-shirts or mugs) and Retype (identify fonts from raster images or outlined text). It also added Shared Comments (real-time annotation). adobe illustrator versions by year

The original. Illustrator 1.0 was born out of Adobe’s need to demonstrate the capabilities of the PostScript language. Unlike today’s colorful, icon-driven workspace, version 1.0 was starkly minimal. It ran on the Apple Macintosh (the only computer with a GUI suitable for design) and featured only a grayscale workspace. Users drew paths using the Pen Tool (which worked fundamentally the same as today) and Bezier curves. There was no color fill—only black and white outlines. The interface consisted of a simple drawing window and a separate floating toolbox.

Adobe moved to a subscription model (SaaS). Updates became more frequent and feature-driven rather than version-number driven.

The Freeform Gradients and Trim View. Freeform gradients allowed you to place color stops anywhere inside a shape (like a gradient mesh but easier). Global edits let you change all instances of a color or shape across the document. Trim View hid all non-artboard content for focused work.
