Anno 1503 City Layout
Do not scatter production buildings. Instead, create a Central Production Spine:
[Deep Forest] --- [Lumber Camp] --- [Road] --- [Sawmill] --- [Road] --- [Storage]
|
[Tool Workshop]
|
[Ore Smelter]
Connect this spine to your residential area via a single guarded bridge or chokepoint. This allows you to place a single "Guard Tower" to defend both your economy and your homes from pirates. anno 1503 city layout
Critical Spacing: Keep production buildings 6 tiles away from the nearest residential road. If you see a cloud of smoke over a building, move it further away. Do not scatter production buildings
For the ultimate efficient city, veterans recommend the Wheel and Spoke design. This layout minimizes walking distances for goods and maximizes tax revenue from high-level houses. Connect this spine to your residential area via
How to build it:
Why it works: Goods flow inward (from fields -> industry -> market), while the wealthy citizens stay safe and clean in the center.
| Principle | Implementation | |-----------|----------------| | Market-Centric Housing | Every residence must touch a road that connects to a marketplace. | | The 11-Tile Rule | Market radius = 11 tiles from market building. Houses beyond this won’t upgrade or pay taxes. | | Road as Arterial | Roads don’t speed production but are required for connectivity. Use dirt roads early; upgrade to stone only for main axes. | | Separation of Zones | Keep heavy industry (smelters, charcoal burners) away from housing to leave space for expansion, not due to pollution mechanics (absent in 1503). | | Water Access | Fishing huts, shipyards, and harbors must have unobstructed coastlines. Reserve shorelines early. |
