CM 03/04 had a famously exploitable match engine. To get the best out of these players:
A great team needs a heartbeat in the center of the park. CM 03/04 had specific player profiles that were overpowered, specifically regarding work rate and long shots.
1. Steven Defour Before he was a Belgium international, he was a gem at KAA Gent. Defour is arguably the greatest central midfielder in the game’s history. He had everything: tackling, passing, work rate, and stamina. If you paired him with a defensive anchor, Defour would run the game. He was the Patrick Vieira figure you could sign for under £1 million at the start of a new save.
2. Kim Källström The "Swedish Beckham." Playing for Rennes, Källström was the king of the left flank. His crossing and long shots were maxed out early, and he was surprisingly robust. If you needed to break down a stubborn defense, you simply instructed Källström to "shoot from distance." The ball would end up in the top corner more often than not.
3. Miguel Veloso Before he became a household name, Veloso was hiding in Sporting CP’s B team or available for a low release clause. A defensive midfielder who could also play center-back, Veloso was aggressive, tactically intelligent, and physically dominant. He was the perfect signing to solidify a shaky defense.
These players started the game as the elite. If you could afford them, build your team around them.
Before we dive into cheap bargains, we have to acknowledge the four players who break the game. If you had the budget to sign any of these four, you won the league.
Defensive Midfield / Center Mid (DM/MC)
Attacking Midfielders / Wingers (AMC/AML/AMR)
You cannot discuss the best players of CM 03/04 without mentioning The Diablo Tactic. The game engine had a flaw that allowed a player in the "AMC" position (Attacking Midfielder Central) to exploit the gap between the opponent's defense and midfield.
If you signed Freddy Adu or Rafael van der Vaart and played them in the AMC role within the Diablo formation, they would score 60+ goals a season. The game was broken, but it was beautifully broken.
The Swedish magician. While Todorov scores the goals, Farnerud creates them. He arrives with "Crossing 19," "Passing 18," and "Flair 20." He is relatively cheap (around £1m) and becomes a Ballon d’Or contender by 2006.
The Goat. Ask any CM 03/04 veteran for the best player, and they will whisper "Todorov." At 18, he costs roughly £2 million. Within two seasons, he scores 60+ goals. His stats—Finishing 20, Off the Ball 20, Pace 18—make him better than any real-world striker. He is the ultimate "cheat code."
