A PK4 is simply a ZIP archive renamed. It contains the skeleton of Doom 3: models (md5mesh), textures (tga/dds), sounds (ogg), maps (map), and game logic (script). The engine reads these like virtual hard drives.

Here’s the “new” part modders love. These projects ship custom PK4 files that do not contain original id assets. Examples:

If the user owns original CD/DVDs (2004 release or 2005 DVD edition), the PK4 files are located on the discs.
