The Samsung ML-2160 series represents a line of entry-level monochromatic laser printers widely utilized in small office and home environments. A critical aspect of the maintenance of these devices is the management of consumables. Samsung implements a toner cartridge authentication system using a specific EEPROM chip on the cartridge. This chip communicates with the printer’s mainboard to track page yields and disable printing once a predetermined limit is reached, regardless of the actual remaining toner volume.

This paper discusses the "firmware reset" method—a software-based approach to reprogram the printer’s internal logic—allowing the use of refilled or third-party toner cartridges without the need to replace the chip on every cartridge.

Result: Clears EEPROM errors, paper jam memory, and some toner counters.

| Setting | After reset | |---------|--------------| | Admin password | sec00000 or blank | | Network mode | DHCP enabled | | WiFi SSID (W models) | Samsung_ML-2160W_xxxx | | WiFi password (W models) | None (open) or default printed on label | | Power save | 20 minutes | | Language | English (or region default) |

If you flashed the firmware and now the toner light is permanently red:

You need version 4.00.01.23 or 3.00.01.11. Do not use the latest version from the HP/Samsung website. Search reputable printer support forums (like justanswer.com or printerknowledge.com) for archived firmware files. For safety, look for a file named: ML-2160_Series_v4.00.01.23.exe or ML-2160W_Series_v3.00.01.11.exe

Important: The "W" models (2160W/2165W) have different firmware due to Wi-Fi hardware. Do not cross-flash.

  • Using Samsung Easy Printer Manager (Windows):

  • If your version ends with .35, .36, or higher, you are locked out of compatible toners.
