The story opens in a dark, gloomy forest near the Kingdom of Albania. A young man named Florante is tied to a giant tree (higuera). He is weeping, growling like a wild animal, and cursing his fate. He is alone, believing that his beloved, Laura, has betrayed him with his enemy, Adolfo.
