Goethe Zertifikat Wortliste B2 -

The official list ensures you learn standard, high-register German. You won't waste time learning obscure slang or archaic terms. Every word on that list has a statistical probability of appearing on the exam.

You can know 5,000 words and still fail the B2. Why? Because the exam tests paraphrasing.

In the Reading section, a text will say: “Die Firma musste aufgrund finanzieller Schwierigkeiten Mitarbeiter entlassen.” A question will ask: “Warum reduzierte das Unternehmen seine Belegschaft?”

If you only know “entlassen” (fire) but not “reduzieren” (reduce) or “Belegschaft” (workforce), you fail. The Wortliste B2 must be studied in synonym clusters:
