Since the US uses a 4.0 scale, a direct conversion is impossible without a formula. The most widely accepted method is the Modified Bavarian Formula or a standard equivalence table.
❌ Using a US 4.0 calculator directly. A Spanish 7.0 is a "Notable" (good), but on a US scale, that translates to roughly a 2.7–3.0 (mediocre). You need a Spanish-specific calculator that applies the conversion table.
❌ Ignoring credits. If you got a 9.0 in a 1-credit seminar and a 5.0 in a 12-credit core class, your average is not (9+5)/2 = 7.0. It is closer to 5.3. A proper calculadora GPA ponderada is essential.
❌ Forgetting "No Presentado" (NP). In Spain, an NP usually does not count against your GPA. A bad calculator will count it as a zero.
In Spain, passing is a 5.0. A 6.5 is a "Notable," and a 9.0 is "Sobresaliente." If you plug a Spanish 7.5 into a US calculator, you get a terrible GPA. A dedicated Spanish GPA calculator converts your grades correctly for three scenarios: gpa calculadora espa%C3%B1a
Before converting to an American GPA, one must calculate the accurate Spanish average.
Formula: $$ \textNota Media = \frac\sum (\textGrade \times \textCredits)\textTotal Credits $$
Example:
$$ \frac(8.0 \times 6) + (5.5 \times 6) + (9.0 \times 3)15 = \frac48 + 33 + 2715 = \frac10815 = 7.2 $$ Since the US uses a 4
Note on "Suspenso" (Fails): Different universities have different policies on failed subjects.
En universidades europeas, se usan los ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). En España, cada asignatura tiene un número de créditos. La fórmula es:
GPA = Σ (Nota GPA convertida × Créditos ECTS) / Σ Créditos totales
GPA = (Suma de [Créditos_i × GPA_i]) / (Total de Créditos cursados) $$ \frac(8

To convert your Spanish grades to a US GPA (4.0 scale), you generally use a conversion table. While there is no single "official" conversion, the most commonly accepted method by US universities for Spanish applicants is as follows:
| Spanish Grade | US Letter Grade | GPA Points | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | 9.0 - 10 | A | 4.0 | | 7.0 - 8.9 | B | 3.0 | | 5.0 - 6.9 | C | 2.0 | | 0 - 4.9 | F | 0.0 |
