Create a commandline.txt file in your GTA IV root folder and add these lines to boost performance:
-norestrictions
-nomemrestrict
-availablevidmem 2048
-percentvidmem 80

Cause: The executable requires DirectX 9.0c libraries, which may not be fully installed on modern Windows.

Many antivirus programs (McAfee, Norton, Bitdefender) falsely flag GTAIV.exe as a threat.
Rockstar now distributes its PC games directly through its own launcher. The version available here includes major updates and removes the infamous Games for Windows – LIVE (GFWL) requirement. When you install via Rockstar’s launcher, the correct, patched GTAIV.exe is placed automatically in your installation folder.
