It is a common mistake to download a standard MAME ROM and try to run it in HBMAME, or vice versa. They are not fully cross-compatible.

Crucial Note: Because HBMAME is a derivative, it lags slightly behind the official MAME releases. However, the core team is very active. As of late 2024/early 2025, HBMAME generally syncs with MAME versions 0.260 and above.
