This is a grey area. The original Helltaker is freeware. Vanripper, the developer, has stated in interviews that he loves the community and their fan works. He has even retweeted fan games and mods.

The writing is one of the game's strongest points. The dialogue is dry, cynical, and packed with pop-culture references. Conversations with the demons are as much a part of the reward as solving the puzzles.
The game features an original soundtrack composed by Mittsies. The music is a heavy blend of industrial and electronic beats that perfectly fits the atmosphere of Hell. On mobile, the audio quality remains crisp and is a massive part of the experience.
