Why it works: Often ranked #1 on MyAnimeList, this series is flawless. Two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, use alchemy in a failed attempt to resurrect their mother, costing Ed an arm and a leg (literally) and Al his entire body. They embark on a quest for the Philosopher's Stone to restore themselves. Recommendation: It has a tight plot (64 episodes), no filler, incredible fight choreography, and a philosophical core about sacrifice and imperialism.
