If you watch only one anime in your life, make it Attack on Titan. What begins as a simple, horrific premise—humanity lives inside giant walls to escape man-eating giants—morphs into a complex geopolitical drama about war crimes, generational trauma, and the cyclical nature of hatred. The animation studio, Wit Studio (later MAPPA), delivers cinematic quality action sequences. The manga is equally stunning, though the anime’s soundtrack (composed by Hiroyuki Sawano) elevates it to a masterpiece.
Why it’s popular: It subverts every shonen trope. The "hero" doesn't always win. The lines between good and evil blur until they vanish entirely.
The antidote to Attack on Titan. Sometimes you need a warm hug in animated form. You’ve watched the big three

Do not watch the 2001 version. Watch the 2019 reboot. Tohru Honda is an orphan living in a tent in the woods. She is taken in by the mysterious Sohma family, who are cursed to turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac when hugged by the opposite sex. What sounds silly turns into a devastatingly emotional exploration of abuse, acceptance, and found family. The manga is a classic, but the recent anime adaptation is visually flawless.
Why it’s popular: It balances laugh-out-loud comedy with heartbreaking trauma perfectly.
