Before we start, why go through the trouble?
If the game asks for a higher firmware version than your PS3 has, you may need to spoof or use HEN with version patch. Alternatively, repack with lower target firmware – but some games won’t boot.
| Method | Speed | Compatibility | Difficulty | |--------|-------|---------------|------------| | ISO mount | Slow (emulation) | Medium | Easy | | JB folder | Fast | High (requires CFW) | Medium | | PKG repack | Fastest | Very High (XMB install) | Hard | how to convert iso to pkg ps3 better
Tested games: Demon’s Souls, GTA V, The Last of Us – PKG showed 15–30% faster load times and no BD access errors.
1. Extract the ISO
Marco right-clicked the ISO → “Extract here” using PS3 ISO Tools. He got a folder structure like:
PS3_GAME/ (containing USRDIR, TROPDIR, etc.). Before we start, why go through the trouble
2. Check the EBOOT
Inside PS3_GAME/USRDIR/, he found EBOOT.BIN. This is the encrypted executable.
Important: If the EBOOT is encrypted for disc, it won’t run from the internal HDD as PKG without modification. If the game asks for a higher firmware
3. Make the EBOOT “PKG-ready”
Marco used TrueAncestor PKG Repacker. He placed the extracted game folder into the GAME directory of the tool.
He ran TrueAncestor_PKG_Repacker.exe → Option 1 (Create PKG from folder).
The tool automatically:
4. Build the PKG
He selected “Build PKG” and chose option for “Retail (NPDRM)” but with “Disc-based patch mode.”
Note: For many games, you’ll also need to generate a
PARAM.SFOwith appropriate Title ID (e.g., BLES12345) and Type = “HG” (Hard Drive Game).
After 5 minutes, a shiny DRAGONS_CROWN.PKG appeared — roughly the same size as the ISO.
