    The story begins in the depths of the Rhine river. Three Rhinemaidens (water nymphs) guard a magical treasure: the Rhinegold. This gold can be forged into a Ring that gives its owner absolute power over the world. However, the owner must first renounce love.

    Alberich, a Nibelung dwarf, tries to woo the maidens but is mocked and rejected. Enraged, he steals the gold and, by renouncing love, forges the Ring. Now possessing immense power, he enslaves his fellow Nibelungs to build a hoard of treasure.

    Meanwhile, Wotan (the chief of the Gods) has a problem. He commissioned two giants to build Valhalla, the fortress of the gods, promising them the goddess Freia as payment. When the giants come to collect, Wotan refuses. They strike a deal: Wotan can keep Freia if he pays them the Nibelung treasure instead.

    Wotan and the trickster god Loge descend into the underworld, trick Alberich, and steal the Ring and the treasure. Alberich places a terrible curse on the Ring: "Whosoever holds it shall be its slave, and whosoever does not shall desire it." The giants take the treasure and the Ring, but the curse takes immediate effect: the giants fight, and one kills the other over the gold. The gods enter Valhalla triumphantly, but doom has already begun.
