The intersection of artificial intelligence and game-based learning has long struggled with the "engagement-efficacy trade-off": highly structured AI agents are effective but monotonous, while exploratory agents are engaging but inefficient. This paper introduces PrimePlay, an original topological optimization framework designed to resolve this tension. Presented at JAAL 2024, PrimePlay models the learner-agent interaction space as a dynamic simplicial complex, where prime trajectories are computed via a novel eigen-decomposition of a play-state adjacency matrix. Unlike reinforcement learning methods that rely on scalar rewards, PrimePlay preserves topological invariants of "fun" (curiosity, surprise, and flow). We demonstrate that PrimePlay outperforms baseline playful AI systems by 34% in long-term engagement while maintaining task completion rates above 89%. The framework’s original top (topological optimization) module is proven to be both stable and computationally efficient for real-time interactive systems.
