One of the most frequent questions surrounding the search term "Keyread V20 Mitsubishi" relates to legality. In the United States, Europe, and Australia, tools like Keyread V20 are legal under "Right to Repair" laws for licensed automotive locksmiths and repair shops.
However, V20 includes specific guardrails:
Using Keyread V20 without a locksmith license or dealership affiliation is strongly discouraged and may violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act in some jurisdictions.
For Mitsubishi’s M800 CNC controllers, KeyRead V20 adds tool-life encryption. Each tool group (e.g., roughing endmill, finishing ballnose) is tied to a specific V20 key. If the operator tries to run a tool without the corresponding key inserted in the KeyRead base unit, the CNC issues alarm #M8190 – “Unauthorized Tool Call” and inhibits spindle start. This prevents use of counterfeit or uncertified cutting tools, protecting both the machine and the final part quality.
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix | |---------|--------------|-----| | KeyRead V20 LED flashing red | Communication timeout with Mitsubishi PLC | Check RS-485 termination resistor (110Ω) and baud rate (must be 38400, 8/E/1) | | D500 stays at 0 but key is inserted | KeyRead Base Station not powered or key not enrolled | Cycle power; re-enroll key in configuration tool | | Intermittent loss of access during long cycles | RF interference near USB port | Use a ferrite core on the KeyRead-Mitsubishi cable; switch to shielded RS-485 | | PLC stops scanning when key is removed | Safety logic causing a fault | Add a 5-second delay timer before triggering safe stop to avoid race conditions |
Today, Keyread V20 sits in the digital archives of automotive forums. It is a "zombie" tool—still functional for the aging fleet of 2000s Mitsubishis still roaming the roads in Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe, but effectively dead for the modern market.
It serves as a reminder of a time when the car in your driveway was truly yours to tinker with. It represents a battle between the manufacturer’s desire for control and the mechanic’s desire for access. While modern diagnostic tools are faster and flashier, they lack the rebellious charm of a piece of software that let a mechanic with a laptop beat the dealership at its own game.
So, if you see a specialist whipping out an old, battered laptop to fix a Pajero in a dusty workshop, take a closer look. On that screen, you might just see the familiar interface of Keyread V20—a ghost from the golden age of grey-market diagnostics.

In the world of automotive diagnostics, there is a distinct line drawn in the sand. On one side sits the modern, cloud-based, subscription-model world of OEM tools—sanitized, safe, and expensive. On the other side lies the murky, fascinating underground of "grey market" engineering.
Few tools epitomize this underground era better than Keyread V20 for Mitsubishi.
If you own an older Mitsubishi—be it a rugged Pajero, a Lancer, or a Colt—and you’ve ever lost your keys, you have likely heard whispers of this software. But what exactly is Keyread V20? Why is it legendary among locksmiths and mechanics, and why is it becoming a relic of a bygone age?
Let's walk through a real-world scenario to demonstrate the power of the Keyread V20.
Scenario: A customer has lost the only key to their 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer EX. You have a Keyread V20 and a single aftermarket 8D-70 chip key.
Step 1: Physical Prep Connect your stable power supply to the vehicle’s battery. Connect the Keyread V20 dongle to your Windows laptop (Windows 10 or 11 64-bit is required). Launch the Keyread Suite v20.0.4.
Step 2: Interface Selection Select "Mitsubishi" from the main menu. Choose "Asia" region. Select "Lancer (CY) 2013-2017". The software will ask: Standard Key or Smart Key? Choose Standard.
Step 3: The "Keyread" Function This is where the V20 excels. Select "All Keys Lost."
Step 4: PIN Code Extraction In older systems (V10), you had to calculate the PIN using a serial number. In V20, the software automatically sends a request to the cloud server. Because you are using a licensed V20, the server returns the 6-digit MCU PIN within 10 seconds.
Step 5: Transponder Writing The software will now enter "Programming Mode." Place your new blank TPX2/8D key into the ignition (or against the start button for smart keys). Click "Write." The immobilizer coil will energize. You will hear a distinct "click" or "beep."
Step 6: Verification Turn the key to OFF. Remove it. Re-insert. The security light on the dashboard should illuminate for 2 seconds and then turn off, indicating a successful handshake.
Total time: 2 minutes 10 seconds.
