In the lush, riverine valleys of Central Mindanao, where the sound of the Tumpong (flute) once heralded the arrival of Datus, a different kind of oratory now commands the community’s attention every Friday just after midday. This is the Khutba (Sermon).

For the Maguindanaon people—known historically as the "People of the Flooded Plains"—the Friday sermon is not merely a religious ritual. It is a living archive of their identity. When researchers and theologians search for the term "Khutba Hadith Maguindanaon," they are tapping into a specific fusion: the universal weight of the Hadith (Prophetic traditions) expressed through the unique linguistic and cultural lens of the Maguindanaon Khatib (preacher).

In Islamic jurisprudence, the Khutba is a required condition for the validity of the Friday prayer (Salat al-Jumu'ah). It consists of two segments separated by a brief sitting. Opening: Assalamu alaikum … Atayu sa Hadith o Rasulullah ﷺ:

Arabic: “Kuluu maa fil ardi halaalan tayyibah…” It opens with the Hamdalah (Praise to Allah)

Maguindanaon translation: “Akana kano ko daapt a matan a malatag (halal) ago malinis.”

Explanation: So iya a Hadith, iphamakinasa kiran o Nabi na inayan ta so haram: haram a kakanen (bangkay, dugo), haram a pangagui (riba), haram a kapamagayon (zina). Kita o bangsa Maguindanao na masikapen so malatag a penghasilan – pananom, pagsapi, pagtabang ko kapamagobay. Aya i palayag ko Hadith.

Closing of first khutba: Pendua i Hadith: “Ad-dinu an-nasihah” – so kapaginutalaan i so kaphipiyagiya. Ya Allah, pakayari nangka so katarungan sa Maguindanao…

Unlike a standard English sermon, the Maguindanaon Khatib does not just translate. He extends the meaning. He uses local proverbs to explain the Hadith. In Islamic jurisprudence, the Khutba is a required

Example: If the Hadith is about avoiding anger, the Maguindanaon Khatib will reference Rido (clan feuding). He will say: "Aya kano mamumunong sa karatul a lawas... In so Hadith, ini nggani a so mamunong na di mapakasabot so Islam..." (Do not be quick to draw your blade... The Hadith says the strong man is not the one who wrestles, but the one who controls his anger.)

Wahai kaum Muslimin, marilah kita amalkan hadith-hadith Nabi ﷺ dalam kehidupan seharian; jadikan ia panduan dalam memelihara adat positif Maguindanaon dan menyingkirkan amalan yang bertentangan dengan Islam. Semoga Allah memperkukuh ukhuwah dan memberikan petunjuk kepada kita semua.
