Fix: Move mod files out of ADDONS or SCRIPTS folder, defeat the Blacklist rival, then re-enable mods.
This was the most infuriating variant. You beat the boss. The game loads the "Marked Man" cutscene. Then, you are presented with the "Pick Two Cards" minigame to win the boss's car. You pick your card… the animation plays… and the game either freezes or gives you a "Cash" reward despite you having a 100% win rate on the pinkslip selection. The game logic would treat the boss as "defeated" for menu purposes but would not mark them as "conquered" in the save file.
It’s bittersweet to fix a bug this old. On one hand, it feels like we’re rewriting history. On the other, Most Wanted is too good of a game to be remembered for its technical failures.
Now, there is no excuse. Go take down Razor. Get your M3 back. And when the banner flashes "Blacklist Defeated," you can finally breathe easy knowing the game will actually let you win.

The "Blacklist Defeated" bug in Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005)
is a notorious issue where a Blacklist member is incorrectly flagged as "Defeated" before you have actually raced them. This typically happens if you load a 100% completed save profile and then immediately load a different, incomplete career profile without restarting the game. The "No-Restart" Fix (Manual Challenge)
If you are already in the middle of a career and don't want to lose progress, you can bypass the bugged menu and manually challenge the boss. Meet Requirements
: Complete all necessary races, milestones, and bounty requirements for that specific Blacklist member as usual. Open the Map : Press the key to open the world map. Locate the Boss Event : Look for a
on the map in Free Roam. This represents the boss race location. Drive There
: Drive your car directly to the star icon and start the event manually. nfsmw blacklist defeated bug fix patched
: While this allows you to progress, it often prevents the game from rewarding you with the BMW M3 GTR
at the end of the game. You may also be unable to win the boss's pink slip. The Prevention Guide (Clean Restart)
To fully "patch" the issue and ensure you get the M3 GTR at the end, a fresh save is recommended with these precautions: Isolate Save Files : Only keep save file in your Documents\NFS Most Wanted folder at a time. Move other profiles to a backup folder. Disable "Unlock Everything" : If you use the Extra Options Mod , ensure "Unlock Everything" is turned . This setting is a common trigger for this bug. Restart the Game
: Never switch between a completed and an incomplete profile in the same session. Close the game entirely before loading a different alias. Essential Technical Patches

In 2021, a modder known as nfsu360 (in collaboration with the NFS Mods community) released the "Most Wanted Blacklist Fix v1.0" . This is the definitive solution that finally patched the bug permanently.
For many racers diving back into the 2005 classic Need for Speed: Most Wanted (NFSMW), the "Blacklist Defeated" bug represents a sudden, frustrating wall. Just as the adrenaline peaks after outrunning the cops and defeating a rival, the game crashes to the desktop, often displaying a generic error or simply closing without warning.
This issue is historically tied to the game's transition from Windows XP/Windows 7 environments to modern Windows 10 and 11 operating systems.
The "Blacklist Defeated" crash is rarely a corrupted save file; it is a localization error.
In the original code, when the game attempts to load the "Blacklist Defeated" screen (the menu where you choose your reward cards), it calls upon a specific text string or font rendering instruction. On older Windows architectures, this call was handled seamlessly. However, on modern Windows, specifically regarding the German (DE) and sometimes Spanish (ES) language packs, the game engine encounters a fatal exception when trying to parse the victory text.
This is why the bug often occurs specifically after defeating a Blacklist racer but before the reward selection screen appears—the game literally forgets how to read its own "You Win" text. Fix: Move mod files out of ADDONS or
