Spider80 is the codename for a specific multi-axis articulation system designed by a third-party Swiss firm, Octopus Kinematics SA, exclusively for Rheingold between 1982 and 1985.

Authentic Spider80 units have a serial number beginning with S8- followed by six digits. Free from units will have a hand-stamped "F" after the S8. Exclusive units add an "X" at the end. Example: S8-001247FX.
Remove the rear access panel (Torx T25 required). Locate the mechanical governor – a brass flyweight assembly. On a locked unit, there is a spring-loaded pin. On a Free from unit, that pin has been ground flush. If you see fresh grinding marks, it’s a DIY job. True exclusives have factory-flush pins with a purple anodized coating.
