Romantic breakdowns driven by drug use were frequently tied to external socio-economic factors. Unlike the "sex, drugs, and rock n' roll" hedonism of 1990s/2000s theatre, the 2019 drug narrative was often rooted in anxiety, economic precarity, and the inability to switch off.


One cannot ignore the experimental fringe. In late 2019, a small Brooklyn theatre produced Moscow, a direct adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters set in an upstate New York rehab center.

The Romantic Bait-and-Switch: The original Chekhov has the sisters pining for Moscow. In this version, the characters are addicted to OxyContin. The romantic storyline follows Masha (a bisexual painter) and Vershinin (a married man also in treatment).

Their love scenes are staged during "meditation hour." They pass a stolen pill bottle back and forth. Their whispered "I love yous" are timed with the drip of the narcotic sinking into their bloodstreams. The play’s devastating conclusion occurs when they get clean. This production was the purest expression of "drugs theatre 2019 relationships and romantic storylines" as a search phrase. It answered the unspoken question: Can you trust a romance born of withdrawal? The answer the play offered was a resounding, devastating "No."

While a revival (originally written in 1987), Terrence McNally’s Frankie and Johnny was revived in London’s West End in 2019 starring Hayley Atwell and Sam Troughton. Critics noted that the 2019 revival injected a specific chemical awareness missing from the original.

The Relationship: Frankie and Johnny are lonely diner workers who fall into bed. In the 80s version, it was a play about fear of intimacy. In 2019, director Simon Evans added a layer of recovery culture. Johnny (Troughton) played the character as a man whose romantic grand gestures—the whistling, the breakfast making—were compulsive behaviors borrowed from his previous drug abuse. This revival became a masterclass in drugs theatre because it refused to romanticize the "bad boy" trope. Instead, it showed how addiction patterns masquerade as romantic passion. Frankie’s resistance to him isn't fear of love; it’s fear of being his next binge.

Perhaps the most devastating entry into the drugs theatre 2019 relationships canon was Half-Life by Mary Jane Chastain, which premiered at the Bush Theatre. The play masterfully blurred the line between love and habit. In flashbacks, we see them meeting at a recovery meeting, breaking sobriety together, and constructing an entire universe in a boarded-up flat.

The "romance" climaxes not with a wedding, but with a shared injection. The pair look into each other’s eyes as a timer counts down to zero. It is horrifying; it is also, in the context of the play, the only love they have ever known. Chastain argued in interviews that she wrote Half-Life to critique the "passion narrative" of addiction. "We are taught that intense feeling equals love," she said. "For an addict, withdrawal is the absence of drugs; they mistake that absence for a broken heart."
