Sherlock - Holmes A Game Of Shadows Script Full
EXT. GERMAN FOREST - DAY
Holmes, Watson, and Simza (a gypsy, played by Noomi Rapace) are surrounded by Moriarty's assassins.
Holmes closes his eyes.
HOLMES' POV - SLOW MOTION:
He maps the fight:
BACK TO REAL TIME:
Holmes opens his eyes.
HOLMES
Stay close to me.
He moves. The fight unfolds exactly as predicted. End of sequence.
INT. ORIENT EXPRESS - DINING CAR - NIGHT
Holmes and Watson sit across from a Swiss banker, MEYRINGER (60, terrified). Moriarty's men surround the car.
Holmes whispers to Watson:
HOLMES
Six men. Meyringer has the ledgers in his left shoe. The fat one by the door has a derringer in his sleeve. The conductor is not a conductor.
WATSON (whispering)
How do you know?
HOLMES
His watch fob. Masonic. The real conductor was a Methodist. I checked his teeth.
A man enters. PROFESSOR JAMES MORIARTY (45, soft-spoken, absolute menace). He sits.
MORIARTY
Mr. Holmes. We meet at last.
HOLMES
Professor. I see you've given up academia for extortion.
MORIARTY (smiling)
Mathematics is the poetry of logical ideas. Extortion is merely applied mathematics.
Moriarty removes a small notebook. Writes something. Tears out the page. Slides it across.
MORIARTY (CONT'D)
Your next move.
Holmes reads it. For the first time in the film — he looks afraid.
HOLMES
You're planning a war.
MORIARTY
I'm planning a reorganization. There's a difference. But I suspect you'll be dead before you see it.
Moriarty stands. Pauses.
MORIARTY (CONT'D)
One last thing, Dr. Watson. Your bride is lovely. It would be a shame if she attended the wedding alone.
He exits.
Watson goes for his gun. Holmes stops him.
HOLMES
Not here. Not now.
WATSON
He threatened Mary.
HOLMES
No. He promised to kill her. That's different. A threat is negotiable. A promise is a schedule.

OVER BLACK:
IRENE ADLER (V.O.)
Dear Sherlock...
FADE IN:
EXT. CASTLE BRAM - DAY - 1891
A grey sky over the Swiss Alps. Snow falls sideways.
A HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE races along a cliffside road. Inside:
IRENE ADLER (32, elegant, bruised) sits across from a man in a black coat. His face is hidden. She holds a letter.
IRENE (CONT'D)
You once said that you don't play games. But you were wrong. You just never met anyone worth playing against.
The man across from her does not move.
IRENE (CONT'D)
His name is Moriarty.
The carriage takes a sharp turn. Snow explodes against the window.
INT. 221B BAKER STREET - NIGHT - SAME
SHERLOCK HOLMES (35, disheveled, brilliant) sits cross-legged on the floor. Naked. Firing a pistol into the wall.
Mrs. Hudson screams off-screen.
HOLMES
Thirty-seven.
He reloads.
DR. JOHN WATSON (34, military-stiff, exasperated) enters. Freezes.
WATSON
For God's sake, Holmes.
HOLMES
Ballistics. The new rifling patterns from the Liège armory. Also, I'm thinking.
WATSON
Put on trousers.
HOLMES
Why?
WATSON
Because my wedding is in six hours and I refuse to have you arrested for indecency before the ceremony.
Holmes fires again. A hole appears in the "V.R." (Victoria Regina) carved above the mantel.
HOLMES
Thirty-eight. Moriarty.
Watson stops.
WATSON
The professor? The one you've been ranting about for six months? The mathematician?
HOLMES
He's not a mathematician. He's a spider. And Irene Adler is his fly.
Holmes tosses a crumpled letter to Watson.
It reads: "Come and play, Mr. Holmes."
If you have downloaded a Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows script full PDF, do not just read it. Study it. Here are three writing exercises based on the script.
This is the scene everyone searches for. Holmes and Moriarty meet in a cigar shop. The script contains zero action. It is two pages of pure verbal fencing.
Key line from the script:
MORIARTY (calmly): "No, no. Indulge your imagination, Mr. Holmes. Every possibility. I have made a study of you. It is not your intellect that concerns me. It is your capacity for the illogical."
Why this works: The script uses pauses and repetition to build tension. In the screenplay, the stage directions note that "Moriarty never raises his voice; Holmes is visibly sweating." This is a masterclass in writing a villain who is calm because he is in total control. sherlock holmes a game of shadows script full
