Even with a perfect setup, you may encounter issues. Here is the fix for the top three errors:
Error: "You are using a newer version of Skyrim than this SKSE supports."
Error: "Couldn't find address library for version 1.5.97"
Error: DLL Plugin fails to load (Missing masters)
Before you hunt for SKSE 1.5.97, confirm your game version:
If you already updated to AE, don't panic. You have three options:
First, let's break down the nomenclature. SKSE (Skyrim Script Extender) is a tool used by modders to expand the scripting capabilities of the game. Skyrim’s native Creation Engine only allows for basic commands; SKSE unlocks deeper functions, allowing mods to create complex UI elements, new animation frameworks (like DAR or Nemesis), and intricate game mechanics.
The number 1.5.97 refers to the game version of Skyrim Special Edition (SSE) released on Steam. This version was the final build before Bethesda pushed the "Anniversary Edition" update (version 1.6.x) in November 2021. Because SKSE is version-locked to the game’s executable (SkyrimSE.exe), you must have SKSE build 2.0.20 (which corresponds to game version 1.5.97) to run mods on that specific patch.
To understand 1.5.97, we have to go back to November 11, 2021. Bethesda released the Anniversary Edition upgrade. While the content was fine (fishing, Saints & Seducers, etc.), the code was a disaster for modders.
Bethesda recompiled the entire executable (the .exe file). This meant that every single DLL-based mod (mods that use SKSE for deep code injection) broke overnight. We’re talking about mods like:
The modding community split into two camps: AE (1.6.x) and Pre-AE (1.5.97) .
While OAR (Open Animation Replacer) is the modern successor, many animation collections were built specifically for DAR on 1.5.97. If you rely on a mod list from 2020-2021, you need the 1.5.97-compatible DAR.
You cannot launch Skyrim 1.5.97 through the standard Steam "Play" button if you want SKSE to work.
Method 1: Direct Launch
Method 2: Mod Organizer 2 (Recommended) If you are using MO2 (which you should be for 1.5.97 modding):
Downgrade everything to pure 1.5.97 (no AE content). This is safest for modlists like Ultimate Skyrim or Living Skyrim 3.
