When analyzing the fictional and real-life romantic storylines of 2021, three archetypes dominated the narrative.

1. Bridgerton Season 2 (Netflix, 2022 but heavily anticipated in late 2021)

2. Sex/Life (Netflix, 2021)

3. Ted Lasso Season 2 (Apple TV+)

4. Young Royals (Netflix, 2021)

5. Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (Netflix/K-drama, 2021)

The "Situationship" wasn't new in 2021, but the rules changed. In 2020, a situationship meant you had agreed to be exclusive because you couldn't see anyone else anyway. This storyline was frustratingly realistic. It involved the "slow fade" text, the ambiguous Instagram story like, and the dreaded "What are we?" conversation held at 2 AM in a dive bar bathroom.
