Then Uncle Shom did something that still haunts me. He opened the pocket watch, placed it on the floor, and stepped through the red door without another word. The door slammed shut with a sound like a breaking rib. And then… it faded. The wallpaper reformed. The hallway was just a hallway again.

But the pocket watch remained. I picked it up. The hands were still moving—forward this time. And on the inside of the lid, where there had once been an engraving of a compass rose, there was now a new inscription: SHOM (whisper): “Oh, you poor stupid kid…”

"Uncle Shom — Part 1" (hereafter Part 1) is a compact, character-driven piece that functions as both introduction and thematic setup for a larger narrative.
