In the age of AI-generated content and staged pranks, the term "verified" has become crucial for viral videos. Why has the internet rallied behind this specific clip as authentic?
Several factors have led to the #Verified tag attached to the video:
A single, verified moment of clumsy canine affection has turned a young woman into an internet star, sparking tears of laughter (and frustration) across social media.
In the endless scroll of viral animal videos, most are predictable: a dog stealing food, a cat falling off a shelf, or a parrot swearing at its owner. But every so often, a clip emerges that is so perfect, so painfully relatable, and so genuinely hilarious that it breaks through the noise. The latest contender for the "Video of the Year" is, without a doubt, the now-verified phenomenon known as "la chica que quedó abotonada por su perro." In the age of AI-generated content and staged
For those who haven't yet seen it, here is the breakdown of the 47-second clip that has already amassed over 50 million views across TikTok, Twitter (X), and Instagram Reels.
The video, originally posted by a Latin American content creator named Valentina M. (username @vale_mj), begins innocently enough. The setting is a modest, sunlit living room. Valentina, a young woman in her early twenties, is sitting on a grey sofa, wearing an oversized cream-colored hoodie with a thick drawstring. Her dog—a hyperactive, medium-sized mixed breed with the energy of a golden retriever and the stubbornness of a terrier—is jumping up and down, demanding attention.
At first, the dog (whose name we later learn is Toby) simply wants to play. He nuzzles her hand. She pushes him away gently, laughing. But Toby is persistent. He jumps onto the sofa, paws at her chest, and grabs the loose loop of her hoodie’s drawstring in his mouth. "I was so embarrassed
This is where the incident escalates.
Instead of letting go, Toby pulls. Hard. In a split second, the drawstring tightens around Valentina’s neck and waist. The string gets tangled in the dog’s teeth, and as he shakes his head playfully, he inadvertently cinches the hoodie closed like a corset. Valentina’s arms are pinned to her sides. She is, for all intents and purposes, "abotonada" —buttoned up, strapped in, and completely immobilized by her own pet.
In an exclusive interview via Instagram DM (translated from Spanish), Valentina shared her post-viral experience. She added that Toby has been given a stern talking-to
"I was so embarrassed. I cried because I was stuck for almost three minutes. My brother finally had to get scissors. But when I saw the video, I thought, 'I have to post this or I will be the only one suffering.'"
She added that Toby has been given a stern talking-to. "He doesn't care. He ate the drawstring. I threw away the hoodie. But last night, he tried to do it again with my bathrobe. This dog has a fetish for strings."
She has since started a GoFundMe to "buy a wardrobe without any strings or drawstrings whatsoever." As of press time, she has raised $3,400.
