The flagship feature of ZBrush 2022, Mask Region, allowed users to mask complex shapes without reliance on topology. However, initial releases suffered from performance hitches and crashes when masking complex, high-resolution meshes.
A critical bug addressed in this version involved the NanoMesh system, specifically regarding the Array Mesh and FiberMesh interactions.
To understand the importance of version 2022.0.8, we must look back. In late 2021, Pixologic released ZBrush 2022. This was a major update featuring groundbreaking tools like Bevel Pro, Knife Brushes, Dynamic Symmetry, and the Sculptris Pro improvements. Then came 2022.0.5 and 2022.0.6, which addressed initial crashes and memory leaks.
ZBrush 2022.0.8 arrived as a cumulative patch. It did not introduce new sculpting features. Instead, it focused on the unglamorous but critical work of stabilization, macOS optimizations, and specific workflow fixes. For many professionals, this is the "golden build"—the version where the exciting new tools of ZBrush 2022 finally worked reliably without unexpected shutdowns or UI glitches. zbrush 2022.0.8
When ZBrush 2022.0.8 finally crashes (it will — it’s still ZBrush), don’t panic. Go to Preferences > QuickSave. Set it to 10 minutes. Every crash, your last 10 minutes of work are in C:\Users\[You]\ZBrushData\QuickSave.
Copy that folder to an external drive once a week. Call it your "Sculptor’s Insurance."
Before 2022.0.8, cutting hard-surface shapes was a dance of masking, hiding, and grouping. Now? Activate Slice Curve (Brush Palette > Curve Brushes). Draw a line across your model. The flagship feature of ZBrush 2022, Mask Region
The magic? It instantly splits the mesh into separate Polygroups along that curve. Use Knife Curve to physically delete geometry along the line.
Pro trick: Hold Ctrl+Shift while drawing the curve to create an instant panel cut with thickness. You’ve just become a hard-surface god.
Later versions got fancy with "Containers". 2022.0.8 has Folders in the SubTool palette. Use them. Before 2022
Shift+Click on a SubTool icon to collapse everything else. Name your folders: [BASE], [DETAIL], [PROPS]. Move entire armies of SubTools with one drag.
Life-changing shortcut: Right-click a folder > "Auto Group" — Splits every SubTool inside into separate folders by name prefix.
The new Knife brushes live under Brush > Brush Type > Knife. Drag them to your toolbar via CTRL+ALT+drag. Assign hotkeys: K for KnifeCurve, Shift+K for KnifeLasso.
Press B, then S, then C on your keyboard. That loads the SnakeHook brush. Then press B, S, H for SliceHook.
Now hold Ctrl+Shift and draw a line. You just performed a polygroup cut and extruded it in one stroke. That’s not even documented.
